Simple Coaster Crochet Tutorial

Craft type: Crochet
Yarn: Thicker side of Medium-weight or bulky, color of your choice
Tool: 5 mm crochet hook

This coaster uses two basic crochet stitches and has a nice, simplistic texture. Using bulky yarn or yarn that is on the thicker side of medium weight gives a better result for this project because it creates a sturdier feel for the coasters.

Abbreviations and meanings:

Chain Stitch: ch
Slip Stitch: sl st
Work into Back Loop Only: BLO
Row X (Number): There are # stitches in Row X.
Round X (Number): There are # stitches in Round X
Rows X–Y (Number): Instructions – Repeat the same instructions for Row X through Row Y; there are # stitches in each row.

Steps:

1. Make 17 ch as a foundation chain.
2. Row 1 (16): Starting from the second ch from the hook, make 16 sl st.
3. Rows 2–26 (16): 1 ch (doesn’t count as a stitch), Turn, BLO, 16 sl st.
4. Work counterclockwise; make a border by making sl st into loops on all four sides of the coaster (please refer to the video tutorial for more details):
• Left side: make 1 ch. Then, for the top row, sl st into the vertical loop on the side. For the remaining rows, stretch the rows out, and sl st into only the top loop on the side.
• Bottom: make 1 ch. Then, sl st into the other side of the foundation chain.
• Right side: make 1 ch. Then, sl st into the vertical loops on the side.
• Top: make 1 ch. Then, sl st into each back loop of stitches from Row 26.
5. Fasten off the yarn. Weave in ends.
6. One coaster is finished. Repeat the same steps to make as many coasters as you’d like.

*Starting with 17 ch and making 16 sl st for each row is just for reference. You can start with a longer foundation chain with more sl st in a row and make more rows to achieve a larger coaster. Or shorter chain and less rows for a smaller coaster. Always make one chain stitch more than the number of desired slip stitches in a row.
