How to Make a Slip Stitch

In a crochet pattern using US terms, a slip stitch is abbreviated “sl st.”
1. Start with a foundation chain. Insert the hook into the second chain stitch (the center of the second “V shape”) from the hook.
2. Wrap the working yarn over the hook (yarn over). Then, pull the yarn through the stitch (the “V shape”) and the loop on the hook. One slip stitch is made.
- To yarn over here, angle your hook so it’s pointing away from your yarn-holding hand, bringing the hook behind the yarn in the working zone. Then, wrap the yarn into the nook of the hook head.
3. Continue to slip stitch into the rest of the chain stitches (see image below).
As shown in the image above, counting the number of slip stitches is similar to counting the number of chain stitches. One “V shape” is considered one stitch.
