Tutorials of techniques used in this project:
This embroidery project is for mahjong players or their crafty friends—or for anyone who’d like to practice satin stitches. The next time the red dragon is in your winning hand, this project will be a great way to savor your victory.
We’ll stitch the tile part this week, and then make the character part next week. The satin stitch used in this project is easy to learn, but many people find themselves needing more practice to get it the way they want. Practicing on a small project like this is a great way to improve.
The Tile Part Steps
- Transfer the design from the template to your fabric, using your preferred method. Then, set up your hoop.
- Work with 3 strands of brown embroidery floss. Use back stitches to cover the outline. When finished, secure the stitch.
- Work with 3 strands of green embroidery floss. Use satin stitches to fill the tile back. When finished, secure the stitch.
The Character Part Steps
A tutorial for the character part will be available on 8/26/2026.
