How to Crochet a Chain Stitch
Crochet Beginner's Guide 4
In a crochet pattern using US terms, a chain stitch is abbreviated “ch.”
The step numbers correspond to the numbers in the image above.
1. Start with a slip knot.
2. Wrap the working yarn over the hook.
3. Pull the yarn through the loop on the hook.3a. Use your thumb and middle finger to hold the slip knot in place.
4. When the yarn is pulled through, a new loop is formed on the hook.4a. Move the hook slightly toward your yarn-holding hand to make sure the new loop stays on the hook.
5a. When making more chain stitches, allow the working yarn to flow over your index finger to feed your future stitches.
6a. When you make a stitch, the hook will move away from where your thumb and middle finger are holding your project. You should counter by moving your thumb and middle finger closer to the hook so that you maintain a constant distance between those fingers and the hook.
6b. While working up chain stitches, try to make sure each is the same size. The chain formed by chain stitches is called the “foundation chain.”
How to count the number of chain stitches:
- When making a slip knot, a small “V shape” will be created. This small “V” is usually not considered a stitch when counting stitches.
- The loop on the hook does not count as a stitch. The counting starts from the chain stitch (the “V shape”) that is closest to, but not currently on, the hook.
