Bobble stitches, often referred to as cluster stitches, add a lovely textured puff to scarves, cushions, and small cozy projects. This guide walks you through the steps for making bobble stitches. The full tutorial video demonstrates making them in a row and in a round.

Bobble stitches are made by crocheting three or four partially finished double crochet into the same stitch and then closing them together. In the image tutorial below, we’ll make a four-dc bobble stitch.

  1. First, make a partially finished double crochet stitch in the upcoming stitch.

A partially finished double crochet stitch is a double crochet that is worked until just after pulling the yarn through the first two loops.

  2. Then, in the same stitch, make three more partially finished double crochet stitches. Finally, wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through all five loops on the hook. One four-dc bobble stitch is made.

  3. Sometimes, patterns will call for a single crochet stitch just after the bobble stitch to make the bobble puff out.

Note: when crocheting a round above the round in which we have made a bobble stitch, sometimes it might be tricky to find the right stitch into which to insert the hook near the bobble stitch area. Slow down and make sure to identify the right place to insert the hook.
