An increase is the act of making two stitches in one of your pre-existing stitches or spaces. In other words, an increase causes two stitches to grow from one stitch or space, and your current row or round will have one stitch more than your previous row or round.

A pattern will indicate where to make the increase and what type of stitch you should make.

For example, when a pattern indicates making a single crochet increase in the next stitch, you will make two single crochet stitches into the next stitch (as shown in the image below). The video tutorial below also shows examples of making an increase with half double crochet stitches and double crochet stitches.
