How to Make a Single Crochet Stitch

Crochet Beginner's Guide 7

In a crochet pattern using US terms, a single crochet stitch is abbreviated “sc.”

1. Start with a foundation chain. Insert the hook into the second chain stitch (the center of the second “V shape”) from the hook.

2. Wrap the working yarn over the hook. Then, pull the yarn through the stitch.

  • To yarn over: angle your hook so it’s pointing away from your yarn-holding hand, bringing the hook behind the working yarn. Then, wrap the yarn into the nook of the hook head.

2a. Follow the direction of the arrow in the image above: pull the yarn through the top loop on the hook to form a new loop on the hook.

2b. There will be two loops on the hook after pulling the yarn through.

3. Wrap the working yarn over the hook again. Then, pull the yarn through both loops on the hook. One single crochet stitch is made.

  • The method to yarn over here is the same as when making a slip knot.

Now that a single crochet stitch is finished, let’s practice by making more single crochet stitches on the foundation chain. The next single crochet stitch will be made into the chain stitch next to the one you just worked into.

To make the next single crochet stitch, insert the hook into the very next chain stitch; then, repeat steps 2 and 3 to finish making the single crochet stitch.

When one single crochet stitch is made into each of the remaining chain stitches on the foundation chain, one row is finished.

Counting the number of single crochet stitches:

  • See the right side of the image above. It’s easier to count stitches looking from the top down. One “V shape” is considered one stitch.
  • When making the first row with single crochet stitches, the chain stitch you skipped in the beginning (by inserting the hook into the second chain stitch from the hook) usually does not count as a stitch, unless a pattern states otherwise. When working on the second row, no future stitch will be made into the skipped chain stitch.
